Team Etiquette

Creating a culture of play, respect and joy—together

1. Show Up with Spirit

  • Bring your good energy: your attitude matters just as much as your passing.

  • Leave the day's stress at the door. We’re here to sweat, laugh, and elevate each other.

2. Accommodate Varied Skill Levels

  • Align against an opponent of roughly your skill level and adapt your level of aggression to match what is wanted by them.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask people what level of physicality they prefer or make requests for the type of play you like.

3. Play Hard, Play Fair

  • No dangerous play

  • Hustle, but don’t hack. Physicality is part of the game, but control and safety come first.

  • Do not argue with the referee about a call - even when it’s questionable.

  • No grudges, no grumpiness. Mistakes happen. Let it go and reset.

4. Pass the Ball—and the Joy

  • Water polo is a team sport - look for the pass, not just the goal and include everyone in the rhythm of play.

  • Play the game in a way that makes others want to play with you and return to practice.

5. Communicate Clearly and Kindly

  • Give constructive feedback if needed - but always with kindness and context.

  • If in doubt, ask before giving advice in the water.

  • Talk to one of the team admin if something’s not working for you.

  • Bring your sense of humor - this is supposed to be fun!

6. Respect

  • Show respect for your teammates, and opponents.

  • Refrain from publicly criticizing players or referees.

  • Refraining from cruel, intimidating, humiliating, offensive, and physically harmful behavior, or any behavior that contributes to a hostile or intimidating environment.

7. Team Responsibilities

  • Pay your dues. We collect fees on an honor system. No one is paid—all fees go to cover costs.

  • Help with set-up and clean-up of cages, caps and lane lines.

  • Be willing to take a set of balls and caps home periodically when you know you’ll be attending the next practice.

  • Sub-out equally, regardless of your skill level.

  • Take time to learn the current rules—they change over the years. This will help you ref better and become a stronger player.

  • Keep your nails cut short

  • Maintain a current USA Water Polo membership.

8. Honor our Code of Conduct.

Bottom line: We're here to challenge ourselves, uplift each other, and have

a great time doing it. Let’s create a team culture where everyone has a

fabulous time!
